CORNWALL’S LIZARD PENINSULA
Located on Cornwall’s south coast, the Lizard Peninsula is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's also home to some of the UK’s most beautiful coastal scenery.
At the very tip is Lizard point, the most southerly spot in mainland Britain with its nearby abandoned lifeboat station and lighthouse. Travelling up the west coast, we’ll explore breathtaking Kynanace Cove, Mullion Cove, Poldhu Cove, Church Cove, Dollar Cove and Gunwalloe Beach. At the northern end of the peninsula is the small fishing town of Porthleven, best-known for being battered by heavy seas when the storms hit, but photogenic in its own right.
The east coast of the Lizard is less rugged, but equally captivating. We’ll visit and photograph the picture-postcard fishing village of Cadgwith, Kennack sands, Coverack, the sea-lashed Manacles and peaceful Gillan Creek. If time permits, the beautiful Helford River will also be included in the itinerary, and the village of Port Navas with its sheltered creek.
We’ll head up onto the high coastal cliffs for sunrise and sunset, walk stretches of the coast path to capture the spectacular views and shoot moody long exposure images of off-shore rocks and sea-stacks. The geology along this stretch of coast is also fascinating – you can spend hours just photographing colourful rock details at Dollar Cove and Gunwalloe Beach.
Late summer is a great time to explore the Lizard Peninsula. Most of the tourists will have departed, sunrise and sunset times are civilised and the weather can be surprisingly mild!
Our base will be the Polurrian on the Lizard (https://www.polurrianhotel.com), a contemporary hotel overlooking the sea that counts Winston Churchill and Clark Gable among its past guests! You will be allocated a double en-suite inland room for single occupancy, but for a supplement of £10 per night extra, you can upgrade to a sea view room, subject to availability.
