Many of you have joined me on my Southern Morocco photo tours over the years, so in September 2022 I'll be offering something slightly different - a tour of Northern Morocco that begins in Casablanca and ends in Marrakech. I've operated this trip a few times before, so I'm familiar with all the locations, and if you'd like to see and explore a different part of this stunning country, I highly recommend you book yourself a place!
Flying into Casablanca, we'll kick off the tour by visiting the magnificent Mosque of Hassan II, the second largest mosque in Africa and the 7th largest in the world. The scale of the place is difficult to take in. Over 25,000 worshippers can gather for prayer inside and another 80,000 outside. The minaret is 210m high and topped with a laser that shines towards Mecca. As well as going on. guided tour inside, we'll also have plenty of time to explore the stunning exterior, and photography is permitted both inside and out.
The next couple of days will be spent exploring the wonderful 'blue town' of Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains. Also known as Chaouen, this ancient town is one of the most fascinating and photogenic in Morocco, thanks mainly to the locals’ use of ‘bluewash’ to paint not only the houses but many of the narrow streets too, giving the impression at times that the town is made of icing sugar! It also boats interesting squares, cobbled streets, and is a great place to spend the day wandering with a camera.
Heading towards the Imperial city of Fes, we'll stop en-route to explore the Roman city of Volubilis, once the Roman Empire’s most remote and southerly outpost. Ruins of the city’s most important buildings can still be found, along with ornate mosaics, and it makes a fascinating photo stop for a couple of hours. From Volubilis we will head a few kilometres to Moulay Idriss, home to the shrine of Moulay Idriss I – the man who created the first Arab dynasty in Morocco and founded the city of Fez.
We'll spend a full day in Fes, shooting from before sunrise until after sunset. We will explore the maze-like medina with its narrow streets and busy souks. During our travels we will have the chance to photograph the 14th century Bou Inania Medersa (old Koranic school), the Kairouyine Mosque, the fondouks and, of course, the legendary tanneries where we can capture aerial views from nearby terraces. In the evening we’ll photograph the rooftops of the medina from the Merinid Tombs above the city.
Our next destination is the city of Meknes where we’ll photograph locations such as the ancient vaulted granaries of Heri Mansour and the tomb of Moulay Ismail. In the evening we'll reach Rabat where the whole of the next day will be spent exploring the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Hassan Tower, the Royal Palace and the wonderful Kasbah Des Oudaias with its old narrow street and colourful painted doors.
Our final destination is the fabled city of Marrakech where we stay for three nights. There is so much to see and photograph in this ancient, bustling city. Our local guide will take us on a walking tour of the souks where we can spend a few hours photographing in the dyers souk, the blacksmiths souk and more. The colourful Majorelle Gardens are a must-see. In the afternoons we will spend time photographing the infamous Djemma el Fna and its colourful characters - the water sellers, dancers, snake charmers, acrobats and musicians. In the evenings we will take to the terrace of a cafe for amazing views of the Djemma el Fna as it comes to life. Outdoor food stalls are pulled into the square, stoves are lit and by dusk the place is teeming with people. We also get great views of the Koutoubia Minaret from here, which we can photograph as the sun goes down and when it’s illuminated against the twilight sky.
