TUSCANY IN AUTUMN
The vast majority of photographers visiting Tuscany head there during spring and avoid the rest of the year. However, autumn has much to offer too so this October I'll be leading my very first Tuscany autuum workshop. The landscape is barren and brown, adding a ‘lunar’ feel to images (great for abstracts) while the foliage has turned from green to gold – the vineyards in particular can look stunning. Mist-filled valleys are still commonplace, along with vibrant sunrises and sunsets, stormy weather and dramatic skies. Another great bonus for visiting Tuscany is autumn is that the days are shorter than in spring. Sunrise is around 7.30am and sunset around 6.30pm, compared to 5.30am and 8.30pm in May, so we can rise at a more civilised time but still enjoy many hours of photography.
From our base just outside the ancient hill town of San Quirico d’Orcia (itself a great place to wander around, camera in hand), we’ll explore in all directions and discover the most beautiful scenes in Tuscany – rolling hills, sculptured cypress trees, winding roads, crumbling farmhouses, magnificent villas (including the villa in the closing scenes of the movie Gladiator), picturesque villages and historic towns and cities such as Pienza and Montepulciano. If times permits we’ll also travel further afield to the amazing hill towns of Pitigliano and Sorano and possibly Siena and San Gimignano.
I usually recommend that participants of my Tuscany workshops fly to Pisa from London Gatwick with Easyjet. However, you are welcome to fly with another airline from another aiport, providing you are at Pisa airport at a similar time to the recommedned flight, as it's a 3 hour drive from Pisa airport to our hotel. Once a booking has been received I will advise on flights - please don't book until you receive notification from me. Information on photogeaphic equipment, clothing etc will also be emailed to you approx 2 months before the trip. If you have ay queries before or after booking, feel free to email me via the Contact page.
