GLENCOE/RANNOCH MOOR IN WINTER
As this winter workshop has proved so popular for the last few years, I've decided to run it again in December 2024.
This 4-day, 5-night winter landscape workshop covers one of Scotland’s most stunning highland regions, an area I have been visiting for many years. Rannoch Moor and Glencoe are one of the last true wilderness regions in Europe and you never have to travel more than a mile or two in any direction before being confronted by yet another dramatic scene.
The days will start before sunrise and end after sunset (weather permitting) and we’ll have four full days of photography, from Tuesday December 10th to Friday December 13th. I’ve included a 5th night in the itinerary so we can shoot all day on the Friday, spend our final night at the hotel, then depart for home after breakfast on December 14th.
I’m going to keep the itinerary open at this stage. The weather at the time will dictate where we end-up and the type of photographs we take, but being based in Glencoe, we have a multitude of opportunities right on our doorstep and can change plans as required to make the most of the weather and light.
On Rannoch Moor itself you can point your camera in any direction and fill the frame with magnificent scenery. However, there are certain iconic locations that we will make priority, such as:
• Lochain na h’Achlaise and the Black Mount Hills – great at dawn and dusk.
• Loch Ba’ – one of my favourite locations, also great at dawn and dusk.
• Black Rock Cottage – clichéd maybe, but a great spot. Similarly, the Lagangarbh Hut is set in spectacular scenery.
• Coupall Falls – picturesque waterfalls and rapids on the River Coupall in Glen Etive with stunning views of Buachaille Etive Mor.
• The Three Sisters of Glencoe - you can't miss them as you head down through the Glen
• Loch Achtriochtan - never get the spelling right, but this loch is down in the bottom of Glencoe and in calm/cold weather looks amazing.
There are also numerous anonymous views on Rannoch Moor that, in the right conditions, make stunning landscapes – such as shots of Buachaille Etive Mor from various points along the banks of the River Etive. In addition to Rannoch Moor and Glencoe, our travels may also take us a little further afield to the shores of Loch Levan and Loch Linnhe, Glen Nevis, Castle Stalker and Loch Awe/Kilchurn Castle.
I'll be flying to Glasgow on December 9th, picking-up a minibus at the airport and driving to Glencoe (approx 2 hours). After breakfast on Saturday December 14th I will drive back to Glasgow airport, drop off the minibus and fly back. In the near future, I will advise on the flights I've booked and if you take the same flights as me, or get to Glasgow airport at a similar time to the flight arrival (times to be confirmed), I can offer you free transfers from and back to Glasgow airport, which will make travel to and from Glencoe much easier, especially if you live in the South of England.
Advice on equipment, clothing etc will be emailed to you approx 2 months before the trip, but if you have any queries, feel free to get in touch via the Contact page on this website.
