HARRIS AND LEWIS - OUTER HEBRIDES

£2,095.00 / £295.00 Deposit / Sharing Discount - £200.00

Located off the north west coast of Scotland in the Outer Hebrides, Harris and Lewis are commonly thought of as two separate islands. However, they are actually one huge, remote and rugged landmass that together form the biggest island in Scotland. The scenery ranges from barren landscapes interspersed with lochs and lochans, to rocky, wave-lashed coastline, magnificent sea stacks, aquamarine seas that wouldn't be out of place in the Caribbean and beautiful beaches of soft sand backed by dunes and marram grasses that sway gracefully in the wind.

This 6-night workshop will be based in Tarbert, the main village on the Isle of Harris, which is an ideal base from which to explore both Harris and Lewis. We will stay at the Harris Hotel, where the hospitality is second to none and the food is amazing!  There isn’t a fixed itinerary, as we will take each day as it comes and choose locations that suit the prevailing weather and light, both of which can change frequently and dramatically!

On Lewis, key locations will include the 5000 year-old standing stones of Callanish, which we will visit at sunrise. The bays at Dalmore and Dalbeg will be on our radar, along with the dramatic cliffs and sea stacks at Mangersta, the Stac a'Phris arch and the beaches of Traigh Mhor and Traigh Gheardha. We’ll also make time to photograph some of the abandoned crofts that are scattered around Lewis, and if time permits we'll head up to the Butt of Lewis.

On Harris, Luskentyre beach is a place to let your creativity flow! We will spend hours there, not only shooting the natural beauty of the scenery and light in a traditional way, but also experimenting with slow shutter speeds, ICM and other techniques to create artistic images that capture the wonderful colours and patterns of the sea, beach and sky, with the Harris Hills and the island of Taransay as a backdrop. Other stunning beaches are to be found at Seilebost, Scarista and Horgabost. These locations can be the source of fantastic images regardless of the weather. In fact, often, the wilder the weather is, the better the images! Our exploration of Harris will also take us to the salt marshes at Northton, and along the scenic Golden Road that meaders among the Bays of the east coast.

During the trip, we will have 5 full days of dawn to dusk photography (weather permitting). Lee will be on hand at all times to offer help and advice and make sure you return home with some fantastic images, whether they’re colour, black & white or even infrared – Lee will be taking his IR converted DSLR.

Advice on flights to Stornoway will be provided once sufficient bookings have been made to make the trip viable, and on equipment, suitable clothing etc a couple of months before the trip.

If you have any queries, feel free to email Lee at info@photoadventures.co.uk.
