The 'Canary Island' of Lanzarote may be best known as a popular package holiday destination, but leave the tourist resorts behind and you'll discover a place of unique drama, beauty and history.

The lunar-like landscape and rugged coastline was formed and shaped over millennia by immense volcanic activity, evidence of which can be seen literally everywhere in the form of black sand beaches, shapely mountains and sprawling lavafields.

Historic towns and villages such as Teguise and Haria offer tantalising glimpses of a life before the tourists arrived (that still exists today), while the creative influence of artist and architect Cesar Manrique can be seen across the island in the form if quircky building and monuments. Throw a sunny, almost rain-free climate into the mix and you have a year-round photographer's paradise!

Based at the luxurious La Cala Suites near the busy Marina Rubicon, this six-night trip will take-in all the key locations on the island, and more. We will be ideally situated to explore Lanzarote's most dramatic coastline at Los Hervideros and near the small fishing village of El Golfo, where an enticing green lagoon, the Charco de los Clicos, can be found.

The Timanfaya National Park is also easily accessible. This is one of the world's biggest volcanic areas, and Lanzarote's landmark location, where we will shoot barren lava fields and colourful 'Fire' mountains . Back in the 18th century, a series of massive eruptions from this region covered the island in ash and lava and changed its appearance forever.

The wine growing region of La Geria features hillsides covered in low horseshoe-shaped walls of volcanic rock that protect vines growing in hollows in the black volcanic soil. The patterns created make fantastic images.

On the north east coast is the amazing Caleta de Famara, a long, wild and windswept beach backed by towering cliffs that's a popular hang out for sun-tanned surfers. Sand dunes fringe the beach while waves pound the shore. We'll visit at sunrise and sunset to make the most of the light,

Further north, we'll visit the Jardin de Cactus, the Cueva de los Verdes, the coastal villages of Arrieta and Orzola, as well as Cesar Manrique's best-known projects - the Mirador del Rio and his former home near the village of Haria.

Lanzarote is definitely a place where you can find your creative voice. As well as conventional colour and black & white landscape images, there will also be opportunitues to experiment with low light photography, multiple exposures, long exposures and ICM (Intentional Camera Movement). If you have an infrared camera you are also encouraged to bring it along as Lanzarote is the perfect location for IR photography!
