STUNNING SANTORINI

Santorini is by far the most photogenic of the Greek Islands. With picturesque whitewashed villages clinging perilously to the rim of an ancient volcano crater and spilling down its steep slopes, it’s impossible not to feel photographically inspired. When viewed from a distance, the town of Fira and villages of Oia and Imerovigli look magnificent, dwarfed by the sheer scale of the volcanic landscape, and then once inside they each become a photographer’s paradise of beautiful blue-domed churches, pretty white-washed houses, snoozing cats and pots filled with vibrant flowers.

As well as the main coastal centres of Fira, Firostephani, Oia and Imerovigli, we will also visit several of the inland settlements where fewer tourists venture and the way of life is much more traditional - Emporio, Megalachori, Pyrgos, Messaria, Vothonos and Exo Gonia have their own unique character and no shortage of subject matter.

In addition to classic wide-angle views, there are details and abstracts at every turn, and great shots can be taken at any time of day. Even the harsh midday sun presents fantastic opportunities, though our days will begin at dawn, when the light is atmospheric and the colours pastel, and end after sunset, when buildings are thrown into sharp silhouette and the sky burns red and orange (weather-permitting!). We'll also stay out during evening twilight, when the villages light up with a myriad of manmade colours against the fading sky.

Our base for the six nights of the trip will be a small, comfortable hotel in Finikia (the Finikia Memories Hotel), just outside Oia in the North of Santorini, perfectly-situated for excursions into Oia and further-afield. We will travel around the island in an air-conditioned minibus.

Although intensive photography is the main aim of this trip, there will also be time time to relax! I have chosen early May  for this trip as the island will be less busy with tourists but the temperature is still very pleasant at around 22°C. We should also see more than just cloudless blue skies – some cloud can add interest and soften the light, as well as making sunrise and sunset potentially more breathtaking!
